The International Peace Federation aims to raise awareness on peace and promote international commitment and solidarity around peace. We lead an international network of people around the subject of peace. We inform, support, and train people on peace psychology. Our initiatives are designed to foster dialogue and understanding around international peace efforts.

Global Peace Index (GPI)

What is the GPI?

The Global Peace Index (GPI) is the leading measure of global peacefulness. It uses 23 indicators from trusted sources to assess peace across three domains:

  • Societal Safety and Security

  • Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict

  • Militarization

GPI 2024 Highlights

  • Global peacefulness declined by 0.56%, marking the 12th decline in 16 years.

  • 65 countries improved, while 97 declined, the highest deterioration in a single year since GPI began.

  • Europe remains the most peaceful region but saw its largest decline in militarization since 2008.

  • North America experienced the largest regional decline, driven by rising violent crime.

  • MENA remains the least peaceful region, with Sudan and Yemen among the least peaceful countries.

Key Drivers of Decline

  • Gaza Conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war significantly impacted global peacefulness.

  • The rise of asymmetric warfare and increased use of drones by non-state groups have made conflicts more widespread.

  • War's economic impact is severe, as seen in Syria’s GDP collapse by 85% from 2010 to 2020.​

Can an Individual make an impact?​

There is a well-established correlation between peace and mental health. Living in peaceful environments—free from violence, conflict, or instability—tends to support better mental health outcomes, while exposure to conflict, violence, or societal unrest often correlates with higher rates of psychological distress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

On the other hand, improving individual well-being has been linked to broader societal peace. When people have better mental and physical health, they are more resilient, cooperative, and capable of contributing to peaceful environments. Positive mental health fosters empathy, reduces aggression, and helps people manage conflicts more constructively.
